Toyota Motor Homes

The Toyota Chinook was the first motor home built on a Toyota Truck Chassis. The Chinook was introduced in 1977 on a standard duty chassis. Thus entered the age of the Toyota motor home, in most cases though the resulting product was not sold under the name Toyota.

Toyota provided the chassis for a large number of different motor home manufacturers. Well known motor home manufacturers like Winnebago, Itasca, Sunrader, Dolphin and Seabreaze, Huntsman, Coachman, RBR and New Horizons all produced small class C motorhomes on the standard duty Toyota Truck chassis. The last of the manufacturers to use the standard duty chassis was Winnebego, Dolphin and Seabreaze which ended in 1992.

Early models from 1977 to the year 1980 used Toyotas straight 4 gasoline powered 2.2L 20 R engine and a 4 or 5 speed transmission.

For 1984 through 1989 the larger 22R 4 cylinder engine was available.

Later motor home manufacturers like 1991 Road Warrior and 1991 Toyota Dolphin moved up to the larger 6cylinder engine.

Starting with 1986 some of the RV manufacturers had stepped up to the larger Toyota 1 ton chassis. This along with increasing the engine sizes allowed the manufacturers to make larger and larger RVs.

Toyota Campervan

Rather similar to a very small motorhome a camper van is often built on a pickup chassis. In the case of the Toyota Land cruiser camper, it was built on a 4x4 pickup chassis.
